Gulf Oil Spill information

While this tragic event confronts us all, this page will have information and links to other sources. We are aware and share your concern.

Below is a recent message received from the USFWS (U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service), and related information.

TriState does not need and will not ask for any donations towards the oil spill operations since BP is paying for everything. Also that we are working on a request to FWRA, NWRA, etc to identify people who want to help, particularly for people located in the states of FL LA MS AL. Please be patient :-)

On a spill of this type it is a massive multiagency response. I have spoken with Tristate and they are currently locating possible sites for the spill response. there are many factors that go into this decision - possible land fall, being only one of them. They are locating possible warehouse sites. They bring in everything. Portable water heaters, tankers to remove waste water. (this is all under OSHA) they will arrange wash training for volunteers and set up volunteer schedules etc.

Triaging, washing and rehabbing oiledbirds is very different from the regular rehab we do eveyday. The rescue alone is an ordeal and depending on the type of crude takes specially trained and outfitted personnel. Please remember that petroleum products are dangerous to humans also.

Use the wildlife hotline - it will help Tristate determine numbers and locations as well as provide the appropriate response.
Hotline: 866-557-1401

Only TriState Bird Rescue and Resarch has been contracted by BP to coordinate the oiled wildlife response and the Service (USFWS) is working with TriState, recognizing their expertise in oil spill wildlife response so all rehabilitation efforts will have to be coordinated through the Service/TriState. Coordination is vitally important for recovery and research efforts as well as every bird is considered evidence, and there are human safety issues also to be concerned about if you are directly handling oiled wildlife.

An announcement is currently being prepared that will advise people what type of help is needed and where to send your information. Tri State Bird Rescue and Reseach has been contracted by BP to coordinate all wildlife response and an oiled wildlife hotline has already been established at 866-557-1401 (toll free) for wildlife rescue and recovery. The Region 4 migratory bird permits chief Carmen Simonton is also onsite in Lousiana helping to organize the response efforts with TriState.

If you are not familiar with TriState, please visit www.tristatebird.org. They are considered among the world's leading oiled wildlife incident responders.

The hardest part about this incident is waiting and thinking about what could happen. But in the best interest of our wildlife, the response effort must be coordinated to be the most effective and efficient.

Wildlife Inc. is not seeking material donations for the spill at this time. If you would like to volunteer, should the spill threaten our area, please use our contact page to send us your name and phone number. Your information will ONLY be used for this purpose.
